Summer Assignment for Advanced Placement European History

Students must read the assigned novel “The Agony and the Ecstasy” by Irving Stone and write a five paragraph essay on the following topic:

Explain the definition of Humanism as given by Michelangelo in Book 3 Chapter 3 (page 107 in the 1961 edition)  and then demonstrate how three accomplishments, artworks, or aspects of the life of Michelangelo exemplify this Humanist outlook.

 Rubric

 A-    Essay has 5 complete paragraphs with Humanism defined and explained with 3 clearly identified example and an explanation of how each example demonstrates aspects of humanism

B-    Essay has 5 complete paragraphs with humanism defined with 3 examples but poor explanations of how they demonstrate humanism.

C-    Essay has only four paragraphs with humanism defined but only 2 examples and poor explanations of how they demonstrate humanism

D-    Essay has four paragraphs but poorly defines humanism or has less than 2 examples which poorly explain how they demonstrate humanism in the life of Michelangelo

 Summer Assignment Two

Use internet resources to find images of 5 sculptures or paintings of Michelangelo that are featured in the novel “The Agony and the Ecstasy” and explain 3 ways that each work reflects the culture of Greece and Rome, the Renaissance or both.

Both assignments NEED to be completed and passed in on the first day full day of school!!
